(2023-10-30)Broome County East Sports Report
For the three area teams that won sectionals titles Saturday -- Windsor field hockey, Chenango Forks boys soccer and Chenango Valley girls soccer -- much has been learned about their next steps.
In field hockey, the Black Knights will definitely advance to the state semifinals in Class A. Windsor will play Rome Free Academy in a state quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Sunday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
Centereach in Long Island will host the state semifinals and final the following weekend.
Both teams share the Black Knights nickname. Rome FA (17-1) advanced with a 1-0 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse in the Section 3 final Sunday at V-V-S. Fiona McMahon scored the goal for RFA.
Windsor (13-3) won its first sectional title since 2004 with a 2-0 victory over Maine-Endwell on Saturday at Tioga. Elsie Conway and Vienna McCombs scored for Windsor, which suffered all of its losses this season to two-time defending Class C state champion Whitney Point.
Chenango Forks boys will play Section 3 champion Marcellus in a Class B state quarterfinal at noon Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.
The state semifinals and final will be held in Middletown the following weekend.
Marcellus (12-7) advanced with a 3-2 victory over three-time defending state champion Skaneateles on Monday at Phoenix. Austin Racht scored the winner with 1 minute, 1 second left in regulation.
The Blue Devils (14-3) advanced Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Susquehanna Valley at the WNSC. Keegan Watson and Nate Raab scored two goals apiece for Forks, which won its first sectional title since 2015.
Like Forks, Chenango Valley's girls will also play Marcellus in the next round. They'll play in a Class B state quarterfinal at noon Saturday at Waverly. This is a change. Originally, it was scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the WNSC, which is what the NYSPHSAA website still says, but that is not correct.
Cortland will play host to the semifinals and final the following weekend.
Marcellus (17-3) advanced with a 2-0 victory over Christian Brothers Academy on Friday. Cece Powell scored both goals for the Mustangs.
The Warriors (12-2) won their third straight Section 4 Class B title with a 3-2 victory over Oneonta on Saturday at Maine-Endwell. Maddie Hayes, Emily Nickson and Tiffani Schaefer scored for CV.
