TIOGA -- Elsey Conway and Vienna McCombs scored for top-seeded Windsor, which defeated No. 2 seed Maine-Endwell, 2-0, Saturday in the Section 4 Class A field hockey final at Tioga Central High School.

Conway's goal came less than a minute into play.

The Black Knights (13-3) continued to pressure Maine-Endwell, but the Spartans held strong and found a few chances of their own.

The defensive struggle continued into the second quarter with neither team conceding any ground.

But M-E remained determined to shift the momentum. The Spartans stormed out of the halftime break and began to apply pressure to the Black Knights' defense.

Midway through the quarter, the Spartans had the ball near the Windsor goal when the officials whistled the Black Knights for infringement in the penalty circle, awarding a penalty stroke to the Spartans.

Sophia Castaldo delivered the tying goal on the penalty stroke, but the officials gathered after the play and after a discussion, decided that Castaldo did not begin the stroke within a stick's length of the ball, thus negating the goal.

The Black Knights had handled the wave and McCombs connected on the second Windsor goal with 1:32 left in the quarter.

Windsor had reestablished control of the game and held on to win.

The Black Knights will play the Section 3 champion in a Class A state quarterfinal Nov. 5 at Vernon-Vernona-Sherrill. Defending champion Cicero-North Syracuse will play Rome Foe Academy in the Section 3 final Sunday.

M-E ended with seven penalty corners and seven shots on goal. Paige Olenski saved 12 shots.

Windsor had 14 penalty corners and 13 shots. Bryanna Snowball made seven saves.

The Spartans end their season with a 13-5 record.
